Kuching Holiday

Kuching is hot! It felt so stuffy and very humid. I think much hotter than Brunei but we did have a lovely time. The city was not that busy, when we were there anyway. Maybe its not a peak season for tourists. But we were not complaining, its better that way. We were able to enjoy the place more with less people.

We were staying at a two room service apartment called Somerset Service apartment at Jalan Bukit Mata. It was really a nice and comfy apartment. Hubby and I occupied the master bedroom, quiet spacious with comfortable bed. My parents got the 2nd bedroom, a bit smaller but still comfortable. The living room was homey with nice white/beige sofa with good kitchen and laundry amenities. Too bad I spilled our daughter’s chocolate shake on it hahaha. I felt so guilty. But we enjoyed our stay.

The plus of staying at this hotel was its close proximity with Kuching famous sea food joints, called Top Spot sea food restaurant. Its simply on the same vicinity, just go to 2nd floor of hotel out the glass door into the multiple car park and go up one floor and its there!

The seafood was fab! Lots of fresh fish, lobsters, prawns, craps, mussles, etc etc. I love the food, very delicious and I enjoyed our dinner. You shouldn’t miss this place if you happen to be at Kuching. But word of caution though, it was very busy. Really busy, a big crowd every night. We could see all mix of people, Malays, Chinese, Indian and Europeans and other human races lol. And alcohol was served in abundance. So if you don’t like to see those drinks on your neighbour tables, don’t get there. But I tell you, you wont regret going to this place, the food was really nice.

We went shopping a few times while we stayed at the city. Waterfront was not that bad. It’s a long stretch of pathways along Sarawak river. Not very busy when we were there but still very hot to walk in early afternoon. So I advised you to go during late evening or at night. Lovely place at night of course with all the lights and small vendors and hawkers lined up the street. At the end of the waterfront walkways, there was a Kuching bazaar. A souvenir shops which sell all goodies or handicrafts made in Sarawak.

Along the river, we could see a few small sampans (boats) with peddles braving the water to go to the other side. We asked the locals what have they got at the other side. One of the hawkers told us there were a malay village and some good gerai (stalls) there. So we decided to pay them a visit but to reach there we had to use the small sampan (a journey which only took a few minutes rather than by car which was quiet far). But the sail was quite scary especially when we looked at the muddy water!

My mom although she was from “Kampong Air” was really in a panic. She acted awkwardly and talked nervously throughout the journey which was really funny. But we safely arrived in a mere few minutes. The small sampan can accommodate about 10 people one way and cost us RM0.50 per person only! That’s very cheap, well its just a short distance away anyway but 50 cents? The sampans were operated by locals and some of them were elderly men who looked like they have been doing this job for a long time. They looked tired and weathered and really have to this job to earn their living. Those poor souls. They peddled their sampans and look for passengers from morning till late at night, I think until about 11pm.

We had dinner at the other side of the river but the food was not really that good, well maybe average. We were here on our first night and looked for a seafood restaurant. We were disappointed since there was only one seafood restaurant and the choices were rather limited. But it was still a good night out to see the local community.

Our holiday would never complete if we didn’t visit the museum! Hahaha. This is our daughter favourite holiday spots. We visited two museums while in Kuching but nothing much to say there. Just a typical museum like any other so I am not going to elaborate. The only setback for me was we were not allowed to take pictures while inside them, which was a pity, really. Why don’t you want to show the world your city attraction by blocking tourists from taking pictures?

After a few days, we transferred to a different hotel 1 hr from the city, at Santubong. We stayed at a hotel called Damai Puri Resort and Hotel, very similar to the Empire but of course Empire is much more grand! Nice rooms too. We had our own room and my parents have their own. We spent the afternoon on the beach and the swimming pool. Our daughter had a fun time on the beach. It was lovely to be away from the city, its much more laid back and my dad was really happy with our choice of hotel. We could see the open sea and the evening was lovely with the view of the sunset.

We ended up our holiday by going to Satok market to buy the “Terubok”. A famous fish which could be eaten fresh or salted. The fish also has fish eggs which was really hard to find sometimes and cost so much. I heard 1kg of this fish eggs could cost around RM500.

We had a blast. There were so many fish. The fish mongers even cooked/fried the fish for us so we could bring them over to the hotel. That’s what we did. So lunch was at our room hotel verandah with the fried “Terubok”, while overlooking people in bikinis sunbathing or swimming in the pool. Lovely!

So that’s it. its short holiday but memorable. We enjoyed it, much more special we went with my parents. We didnt get to do this very often so its all good. I am gonna load some pictures soon so watch this space!
